Did you know that bathrooms can be the most dangerous plan in your home! Every year over 235,000 people visit emergency rooms because of injuries suffered in the bathroom, and almost 14 percent are hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

More than a third of the injuries happen while bathing or showering. More than 14 percent occur while using the toilet!

Bathroom S Top 10 Tips for Bathroom Safety
  • Ditch your throw rugs
  • Put nonslip strips, mats or tiles in your tub and show to help prevent falls.
  • Be sure to keep the tub clean to counteract slippery soap scum or mold.
  • Keep the bathroom floor dry, making sure it has no water on it.
  • Place grab bars or rails in or around the bathrub, shower and toilet.
  • Your bathroom show be adequately lit during the day. At night, put a nighlight on the path to the bathroom. Within the bathroom, use a nightlight or install an illuminated switch.
  • If your toilet seat is low, consider buying a toilet seat extender or toilet with a higher seat.
  • Electric Appliances. Unplug hair dryers, curling irons, razors, etc. and store them in a cabinet with a safety lock when they aren't in use. Better yet, use them in another room where there is no water.
  • Equip your shower with a handheld or adjustable shower head.
  • Take your time. The more you rush, the more likely you are to fall.
