Sun Safety

Sun SafetySunscreen can help protect the skin from sunburn and some skin cancers but only if used correctly. Keep in mind that sunscreen should be used for sun protection, not as a reason to stay in the sun longer.

From HealthyChildren.org (sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics):

  • Wear long sleeve swim shirt, hat and sunglasses at the pool and/or beach.
  • Apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes prior to sun exposure.
  • In Florida’s intense sun, use no less than 50 SPF. Choose a sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection. Make sure the ingredients list zinc oxide and titanium dioxide
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours while outdoors and every 45 minutes if swimming.
  • Limit sun exposure between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm as sun rays are most intense.
  • Keep small children under a beach umbrella or in the shade.
  • Keep babies under the age of 6 months out of direct sunlight.
  • Use sunscreen even on cloudy days as sunrays bounce of water, sand and other surfaces.
  • Stay well-hydrated with cool water
